"The Payroll department not only deal with the on-going payroll processing of the Appleby Westward staff," (says Clare Parkin, Appleby Westward's Payroll Co-ordinator) they also work with a large number of our retailers who outsource their payroll to Appleby Westward'.
Appleby Westward is the SPAR (SPAR website) Retail Distribution Centre (RDC) in the West Country. We have a long-established local distribution service currently meeting the needs of a large number of great stores from Bournemouth, Southampton and Portsmouth in the East, Helston, Falmouth and Truro in the West and Bristol and Bath in the North. We have a strong service culture with strict 24 hour order lead times.
However, Appleby Westward prides itself in being more than simply a distributor of goods and takes a very active role in helping retailers increase sales and profitability. As part of the strategy of working in partnership with retailers, the company can also provide retail funding for store modernisation and assistance with funding bank loans through our unique interest free loans scheme.
We (Appleby Westward) regularly co-invest with our retailers and have ploughed £10 million into store development over the past five years to help grow retailers' businesses and maintain our position as the leading convenience brand in the South West ("All Benefit From Joint Co-operation").
The convenience market is booming, but is becoming increasingly competitive and retailers know they cannot afford to stand still, that is why more new retailers than ever before are being recruited to join the big family of SPAR.
Independent retailers know that SPAR is the symbol group that offers them the most complete retail solution. It allows them to benefit from being part of a global brand and yet, at the same time, retain their independence. SPAR may be global, but thinks local - the majority of our stores are independently run and operated by dedicated retailers and their families.
Meanwhile, SPAR is enjoying a period of substantial growth. It is the world's biggest and most international retail food chain, with 19,000 stores in 35 countries. It records an astonishing 12 million transactions a week throughout its 2,800 stores across the country.
It is the biggest symbol group, with UK sales of £2.7 billion. Our package produces a unique convenience offer, including a cost reduction strategy that protects member's bottom line profits at a time of increasing operational costs, underpinned by our ethos of retailers and wholesalers working in partnership for mutual benefit.
We have the widest ranging and most comprehensive advertising and promotions package within the convenience store sector. Key elements are the Millennium Store Development Programme, our highly successful Real Deals promotions, multi media advertising, European Athletics sponsorship and the Keep It Local campaign.
Everything we do in SPAR is about helping retailers create sales and profits. We are the obvious destination for those wishing to grow their business and ensure a prosperous future.
