Dick Read, who had previously been the Managing Director of SPAR (UK) bought the SPAR wholesaler (Stephens & Pope Ltd) and formed Westward Food Distributors in 1968, based in our present location in Saltash, Cornwall.
Dick also acquired two other wholesalers, Wholexsale Ltd of Exeter and Thomas Provisions Ltd, merging the three businesses.
In 1979 Dick Read retired and sold the business to the major Home Counties based VG Wholesaler, Harvey Bradfield and Toyer Ltd which was based in Ruislip, North London.
The modern day Appleby Westward was formed in 1984 by the amalgamation of Appleby & Son of Bristol and Westward Food Distributors. Roger Harvey purchased the business in August 1984 with Martin Appleby, of Appleby & Sons, and David Isaac.
The subsequent company became Appleby Westward Ltd. and retained the existing depot in Saltash, Cornwall as the base for operations. Due to the merger, the business had a new and enlarged territory of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.
Appleby Westward Ltd. became a Plc in 1988.
In 1993 Appleby Westward Plc acquired the rights to service SPAR retailers of Watson & Phillip Plc which enlarged the territory still further covering the South Coast, through Dorset to Bournemouth, Southampton and Portsmouth including the Isle of Wight.
In February 1997 Appleby Westward Group plc was acquired by Brooks Watson Group Ltd. (BWG) based in Dublin, Ireland, which was in itself part of the larger French owned business, Group Pernod Ricard.
As a result Appleby Westward Ltd. became part of the BWG Foods Ltd. group of companies.
2006 witnessed, three of the Directors of BWG Foods Ltd. refinance the company, and separate from Electra Partners, who had previously purchased the group from Group Pernod Ricard. At the head of the group is Group Chief Executive, Leo Crawford.
Leo fulfils the role of Chairman of Appleby Westward Group Ltd., as part of his group duties, and our Managing Director, Mark McCammond reports to Leo within the group structure. Leo, since 2006 also holds the office of President of SPAR International.
Based in Amsterdam, Netherlands SPAR International support and assist SPAR companies right across the globe in over 30 countries, with stores ranging in size from convenience operations at below 1,000 sq.ft. to hypermarkets larger than 200,000 sq.ft. , most recently entering markets such as China, Nigeria and Vietnam.
So from deep down in the West Country, Appleby Westward Group Ltd. sits right at the heart of SPAR throughout the world. The brand with more retail stores worldwide than any other!
