Customers at a Tidworth convenience store enjoyed a throwback in time today (Tuesday 15 February) when pre-decimalisation coinage came back into use.
For the SPAR store in Beech Hill Road was celebrating its 40th anniversary, which coincided with the introduction of decimal coinage in Britain in 1971.
And just for the day, Andrew and Teresa Connolly and their staff were accepting coins like old threepenny bits, shillings and half crowns as legal tender on some purchases.
“My parents Malcolm and Doris were already running a small shop within Tidworth garrison when they decided to buy this store in Beech Hill Road,” said Andrew. “I came into the business 32 years ago, and we now have other SPAR stores in Tidworth, Ludgershall and Pewsey.
“We thought it would be a bit of fun to mark the 40th anniversary of the Beech Hill Road store by letting people come in and buy some goods with old money, and it will be a day of general celebration in the store for staff and our customers.”
