Staff at a Burton Bradstock SPAR convenience store are celebrating after winning a prestigious food hygiene award for the second time.
Sajiv Vij, who runs the forecourt store at Burton Bradstock Cars in Cliff Road, praised his team after they won the award from West Dorset District Council.
The store achieved a five star rating in the council’s assessment of food outlets, ranking the store as excellent. “We won the award two years ago and are delighted to win it again,” said Saj. “It is a great credit to all the team here, and is an award that all outlets in the area aspire to achieve from the local authority.”
Saj is pictured here with store manager Iain Locke and their certificates. The store received five stars on the basis of the quality of the food hygiene and safety of food, general cleanliness and confidence in the management based on previous performance.
Saj moved his forecourt store business to SPAR five years ago when he decided it was time to redevelop a 300 sq.ft. shop which was underperforming at the time.
“I saw an article about a successful retailer in a forecourt magazine and contacted SPAR,” said Saj. “We were approached by all the symbol groups and wholesale companies, but it was clear to me that it was the SPAR name and expertise that we really needed to get the business off the ground. It has certainly paid dividends.”
Along with Appleby Westward, SPAR’s regional distribution company in the south west, Saj redeveloped the business to create a modern 1,100 sq.ft. store, providing a convenience shopping service to the village and surrounding area. “Our store has become a very popular place for people to shop locally since we carried out the improvements,” he said.
