One of the West Country cheeses recently launched under the SPAR own-label in the region has won a prize at the Global Cheese Awards.
SPAR West Country Extra Mature Cheddar won the silver award by finishing runner-up in class in the Farmhouse Extra Mature Cheddar category.
The Global Cheese Awards, launched this year by the Frome Cheese Show to mark its 150th anniversary - making it one of Britain’s oldest cheese shows - attracted entries from cheesemakers all over the world.
Appleby Westward recently launched cheese as part of its newly-branded SPAR West Country range of local products.
Produced by the Alvis family at Lye Cross Farm at the foot of the Mendip Hills near Cheddar, SPAR West Country Cheese is made by hand and matured for over nine months. It contains no colouring, no flavouring and no preservatives.
Made using traditional farmhouse methods, the cheese has earned the status of a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) product. SPAR has made the cheese available in mature, extra mature and vintage varieties.
Milk, clotted cream, eggs, meat, saffron cakes and buns, along with locally produced fruit and vegetables and a bottled ale are already being marketed under the SPAR West Country banner. Appleby Westward has identified 20 additional categories in which to expand its regional brand, and is currently working on developing these.
SPAR’s West Country regional products are grouped under a distinctive, eye-catching branded logo.
Nigel Taylor, Appleby Westward’s Trading Director, said: “The development of SPAR West Country as a brand reinforces our commitment to using local suppliers to provide customers with the best products that our region has to offer.
“We are developing a strong local brand that other multiple and symbol groups will find hard to replicate, and in doing so we are supporting the local economy, helping to protect the environment and providing quality products that customers will know and can trust.”
