A minor refit in a Torbay store has led to an 8.5% sales increase, to the delight of the family who run the business.
Chris Herring, whose family run four SPAR stores in the Torbay area, decided to carry out a small refit at their Shiphay store in order to boost trade.
The refit involved releasing more space for the shop floor by reducing the size of the kitchen, as well as removing low level racking and replacing it at a higher level which, along with increasing the number of bays by six, gave an extra 68 metres of shelving.
In addition, three additional Real Deal bays were installed, one exclusively for beers, wines and ciders, and the centre of the store was re-shaped to improve accessibility for shoppers.
“There was no decorating, electrical or flooring work done at all,” said Chris. “This was a low budget project but the results have been very good and the customers and staff love it.”
The store has increased its range on a number of lines including pet food, grocery, bread and cakes with all categories showing growth and an average increase of 8.5% in the five weeks immediately after the refit.
Kevin Stiff, RSM for the Herring family’s stores, said: “It just shows you do not have to embark on a major investment programme in order to obtain an increase in sales. “These are great results for a small investment, particularly in the current trading climate, and it’s worth other SPAR store owners considering what might be possible for a minimal outlay. Retailers should have a chat with their RSM to find out what can be done.”
