Isle of Wight convenience store operator Hunnyhill Stores Group has opened two new stores in Newport and Ventnor following a co-investment scheme with Appleby Westward Group Limited.
The new stores bring the total of SPAR outlets run by Hunnyhill on the island to 13. The company opened its first store in Newport 11 years ago.
The High Street, Newport store is the fourth SPAR the company has opened in the town, and the largest. It offers a wide range of fresh foods, groceries, off licence, newspaper and magazines, along with food-to-go, fresh-baked bread, a fresh-from-bean coffee machine and a seating area.
The new Lower Ventnor store, which has its own car park, is the second SPAR opened by Hunnyhill in the town and offers a similar range of products and services. Other stores in the group are in East Cowes, Wootton, Ryde, Lake, Wroxall and Sandown, where there are two.
John Perrett, who runs the Hunnyhill Stores Group with his wife Jean, daughter Amanda and son in law, also called John, said: “We have come a long way in 11 years. We now employ more than 120 people in our stores and last year invested over £100,000 in improvement schemes involving our existing stores.”
The company opened its first store at Hunnyhill, Newport in 2000, followed by stores in Sandown and Wroxall. Significant growth came in 2007 when the Group acquired six additional shops from C I Newsagents Ltd. in Carisbroke, Lake, Newport, Sandown, Ventnor and Wootton Bridge.
Hunnyhill’s growth has boosted the SPAR brand on the island. “We have helped rebuild the reputation of SPAR on the island and customers are very pleased with what we have done with the development of our two latest stores,” said John. “They like our deals, which is important as it shows them value.
“By growing, we can get better prices and pass the savings on to our customers. We never forget our customers have a choice, and we are determined to offer great customer service and great prices. Our growth on the island has come about by remembering our roots in the community and striving to exceed customer expectations.
“We are actively building a strong group of stores that reflect the modern SPAR convenience image and meeting changing customer needs.”
