When Christine Rowe landed a job at a Falmouth corner shop straight from school in 1966, she never imagined she would still be there 45 years later.
But Christine enjoyed working at the Albany Road store so much that she stayed on and is now looking forward to retirement after completing her long period of service at the popular local SPAR.
She was taken on as a 15 year old just before the shop was acquired by David and Daphne Jinks. It was originally an ice cream parlour and dairy called Albany Dairy.
Today, the 1,200 sq. ft. store is owned by their son Stephen and his wife Janette. Stephen said: “We will all miss her. Christine has been an integral part of the business for so many years, and very much the Queen Bee of our store.”
Christine, who lives in Penryn, got a job at the store thanks to her Domestic Science teacher at Trecobeas School, now Falmouth School, who told her the position might suit her.
“In those days it was a little corner shop with no self service, and I used to slice meat, bacon and cheese for customers, and even weigh up the loose tobacco that we used to sell from tins,” said Christine. “We used to add it all up using an old fashioned till with press down keys.
“Times have changed and we are now a modern SPAR neighbourhood store with a bakery section which I now work in. I never imagined I would stay so long, but I’ve always been very happy here and stayed on until my retirement.”
