Newly weds Steve and Kris Riggs have just returned to the UK after airport chaos scuppered their plans to get married on Australia's Sydney Harbour Bridge in the run up to Christmas 2010.
Steve and Kris, who live in Plymouth, were caught up in the pre-Christmas paralysis at Heathrow caused by the snow and freezing weather and had to spend three nights sleeping at the airport waiting for a relief flight.
For Steve (38), a painter and decorator in the city, it was a race against the clock – and not just for the nuptials. For in his back pocket were two tickets for the Boxing Day Test Match in Melbourne.
Stuck at Heathrow, they had to phone ahead and rearrange the wedding, which they managed to do. But the nightmare did not end there.
“We had to endure no information, no food and no water at Heathrow until we finally were told there were two seats available on another flight to Singapore that was leaving in seven minutes,” said Kris (23), who works in communications support for SPAR regional distribution company Appleby Westward in Saltash. “So we checked in and rushed to the other end of the airport and just got on the plane.
“When we finally got to Singapore after 15 hours, we were delayed for ages again as the airline staff had no record of us or any idea who we were. After an argument, we eventually got a plane to Melbourne where they managed to lose our luggage for 48 hours.
“The only consolation was that we had our tickets for the Melbourne Cricket Ground, so Steve was relieved about arriving in time for that and we were able to join the Barmy Army after what had been a completely barmy trip!”
The couple then moved on to Sydney for their rearranged wedding ceremony on the city’s Harbour Bridge on 5 January, rejoining the Barmy Army for the fifth and final test at the Sydney Cricket Ground as England wrapped up their historic 3-1 Ashes victory.
Now back in Plymouth after their five week trip, Steve and Kris have no regrets about their decision to abandon the original plans for a wedding in Plymouth last summer in favour of a ceremony in Australia. “The Harbour Bridge wedding was what we really wanted, and with England winning the Ashes as well, it was a trip to remember in more ways than one. Despite the chaos going out, we would definitely go again,” said Kris.
